Nauticat 42

When we started looking for the sailboat, several aspects around the boat were already set in stone for us.

It should be a true blue-water cruiser, a sloop rig design with center cockpit layout, a conservative fin keel with skeg rudder and a ship length between 40 and 46 feet. A very useful and basic idea guided us well: our yacht should be “as big as needed and as small as possible”.

Other aspects that were important to us included a large pantry, a large owner's cabin in the aft, a guest cabin in the bow, two heads, one with separate shower, a large nav-table, lots of storage space, lots of wood interior, a bright and light-flooded salon, a powerful main engine, a strong generator and large tanks both for drinking water and diesel. The "perfect boat" needed to be in very good condition and above all a “boat with soul".

Above all that safety on board has always been our key focus and therefore our expectation of the built quality of the boat for was very high. The Scandinavian yacht building, especially of the 80s and 90s, was considered ideal for our project. Brands like Hallberg Rassy, Najad and Malö all have a reputation of being built way over specs and therefore were our favorites. Besides that the level of "hygge" respectively comfort for life on board has always been more important to us than the performance and speed the boat, because on the blue-water route around the world we are not in a hurry anyway.

While hunting down one of these boats mentioned in the above, something unexpected happened. During a boat tour near Malmö, which ran into nothingness, a friendly Swedish guy approached us and invited us to come on his boat, which was located right next to us.

And suddenly it dawned on us: our dream yacht found us. A NAUTICAT 42.
